Configuring your Site to Use your Domain Name
Last Updated 11/3/2009

By default, when you initially receive access to your new, Volusion online store, you'll notice that the URL of your store resolves to a temporary domain name.

This temporary domain name is used as a URL place-holder until you are ready to go live with your online store. Configuring your online store to resolve to its proper domain name (e.g. www.my-online-store.com) is a simple 1-2 step process as detailed in this article:

Purchasing Domains from Volusion:

Note that Volusion is a licensed ICANN domain registrar. You can purchase any .com, .net or .biz domain from Volusion online at Volusion's Domain Registration page.

If you have purchased your store's domain name from Volusion, once your domain registration order is complete, you will receive an e-mail notification stating that your domain name is ready for use with your online web site or store.

Note that when purchasing your domain name online with Volusion, be sure to enter the primary e-mail address you have associated with your Volusion account into the e-mail field within the domain name order form.

Once you've received this notification you can configure your Volusion store to resolve to your domain name by doing the following:

  • Log into your Volusion store's Admin Page.
  • Click on the Settings tab and click on the Company link. (Version V5 )
  • Under the Company Information area, select your store's domain name from the Domain Name drop down menu.
  • Click Save Changes when finished. (Version 5 )

Once this process is complete, you and your customers will be able to access your Volusion store by entering your official domain name into any web browser.

Using 3rd Party Domains

If you have purchased your domain name from a 3rd party domain name registrar (e.g. godaddy.com), before you can configure your Volusion store to use your 3rd party domain, you will need to configure your domain name settings to forward your 3rd party domain to Volusion.

To do this, you will need to log into your 3rd party domain's online hosting control panel and change your domain name's primary and secondary domain name server (DNS) settings to the following:

  • Primary Domain Name Server: ns3.volusion.com
  • Secondary Domain Name Server: ns4.volusion.com

Once you have updated your domain name's DNS settings, you will need to wait between 24 and 72 hours for these changes to take affect. Once this period has passed, you will be able to log into your Volusion store and select your domain name from the Company page as outlined in the steps listed in the above section of this article.
